FAVORITE SON

Waikiki, Hawaii

This is a love letter to Oʻahu—part neighborhood hangout, part soulful gathering spot.  Favorite Son opens its arms to locals and wanderers alike, honoring generations who’ve called this island home.  Inspired by white sand picnics at Lanikai, the tropical Mokes, and the golden glow of a Kailua sunset, we created a space that blends nostalgia with now.

Our design challenge? We embraced it like a long-lost cousin: honoring the building’s midcentury bones while modernizing for today’s rhythm.  Day slips into night here—espresso gives way to cocktails, and breezy brunch turns effortlessly into an intimate dinner.  From vintage tones and layered textures to thoughtful nods to Hawaiian craftsmanship, the space reflects the soul of the islands: warm, grounded, and glowing with aloha.

Favorite Son isn’t just a restaurant.  It’s Ohana.  It’s story.  It’s the sea, the land, and every heartfelt “welcome home” in between.

In my experience, it can sometimes be a struggle getting designers to amend their design, especially for substantial cost savings, but VRDG finds a way to do it to make the design and budget work.  Saving the project $400k was critical to our success and VRDG made it look easy, though ... I’m sure it wasn’t.
